Show 164:

So this would be the 4th episode of the Justin Wayne show that I've curated/guest hosted on.  Yes, I'm still having fun.  And while I was very tired when I did my part of the show, it was all worth it.

The first band I played was Curxes.  I first heard this band during a marathon listening session of The Dark Compass podcast.  Ro, thanks for playing them.   I contacted the band and they sent me three track.   I played Once Upon a time.  I liked New Wave music when it was first popular.  So this band became an instant like for me.  Within just a few seconds of the song playing I could pick out bits that were (to me at least) clearly influenced by bands like Depeche Mode.
Roberta Fidora has a great voice, and a great vocal range.  The work that Roberta and Macaulay have done so far makes me look forward to what they will do next.

Next up I played a song titled Stop (one more time), by Ghost Kollective (formally known as GhostK).  As of September 2011 the band was composed of _Ghost, CDK and Tacet.  All three members live in different time zone, which no doubt makes composing more complicated, but everything I have listened to so far has been fantastic.   This song I discovered by listening to The Bugcast.  Normally I'd pass on music like this.  But this song stuck with me after the first listen.  When the song starts, it's simple and instrumental.   I was pleasantly surprised by everything that came after.  The group tries to keep everything posted on their website and free.

Breezeless, and their song Have you Ever was up next.  This is a group from Germany.  I found them while surfing Jamendo.   The light bouncy tune reminded me of the Dance songs I would listen to back in High School.  It's cheerful and happy and bound to cheer you up.

The next song holds a special place in my life.   Back in high school I was friends with a guy named Darren Shady.  We were both computer geeks back then, and Darren wrote his own music.  Everything was written and produced on the computer.  This song, Amethyst House on the Beach was written for me back in the early 1990's.  The last time I spoke with Darren he had not written anything as good as this song, or anything he liked as much.   I'm still very flattered to have been the inspiration to write such an amazing song.

Darren does not currently have a web presence.   He did at one point have a my space page.

Up next I played a song by Relivant Dischord.  The song, Days of Deferment.  The group is fronted by Nicholas Andres Depew.  He does all the writing and oversees the bands independent label.

Next we have one of my favorite finds from listening to other Podcasts.  Fresh Body Shop.   This is a group from France.  They're an alternative pop rock band.  I love the different sound they have, and the bass lines in a few of the songs are really catchy. My favorite song so far from this band is Angry Machine.
If you enjoy this band, check out Pedro's instrumental project: The Seventh Alchemy

I don't think that anyone would argue with me that I saved the best track of the show for last.   And what a way to close out the show!  The band was Two Crown King and they're  from London Ontario Canada.  Yes I do like to support local talent!  The band members are:  Goodchild, Ajay, Scotty, Pat, Jer & Dick.  They're touring all summer around Southern parts of Ontario.  And with some luck I'll be at one of those shows near the end of August!
The song I chose from the free album off their web site was We Get Down.  And what's not to like about this song.  It's up beat, fun, catchy, unique in that it blends so many different genre's of music into one great song!  This band is going places and I can't wait to see what they can come up with next.  Go check them out, look at the concert tour and go see them!

Guys if you're reading this I would love to do an interview with you for the show!

I don't know how I'll ever top that song, but I'm going to have fun looking for more music for show 166!

Is Podcasting infectious?

So over the past 3 years I have been very content to listen to podcasts and occasionally send in a recommendation here and there.  Then a chance to guest host came up.  So I figured why not?   Well, that was about 6 weeks ago, and now 3 podcasts in I think I'm rather hooked.  I've only gotten feedback from Justin so far, so I have no idea how the rest of the world thinks of the songs I've picked out or any of the talky bits....   For me it's still strange to hear my own voice.

I love discovering new bands, even if they're only new to me.  Connecting with the artists and getting to ask them questions about their music is a bonus!  Music was the one class I really enjoyed all through high school.  Not only did I take the instrumental music classes, but the vocal ones too.   I was lucky to have sever very supportive music teachers through the years, which may be part of the reason I leaned to play a bit on several instruments.   And I think this support through those years may be part of what has lead me to where I am now, supporting other musicians.

I still play, but mostly just for my own enjoyment.   Mostly just piano and flute now but I have that itch to learn something new....

But I think so long as there is a way for me to guest host for now, that will do.   I don't currently have the means to do my own show.  (I'm currently working with an iphone and a PC laptop)....

It is fun, and so long as it remains fun, I'll keep doing it.

Show 162: The Justin Wayne Show, with a Canadian take over (one hour 25 min into the show)

I wasn't able to be in the chat room tonight.... so hopefully someone out there who listened in will give me some feedback!

Did you like the tracks I selected?
Do you want me to talk more about the bands? The music? My opinions on what was played?

So the list from tonight....

First up was Tenpenny Joke.   I selected their song Black Satellite.  Tenpenny Joke come to you from Australia! I first heard this band on The Bugcast

Second came burning Shapes, and their song Drop.  The band is from the Kent/Surrey/Sussex region.

The band is: Toby (lead vocals, guitar), Dave (vocals, bass),  Andy (vocals, MPC, keys) , and Steve (drums).  Their debut single "Drop" arrived in July 2011.

Third was Antarhes with Summer Wind.  Antarhes are from France, and they first formed in 2003.

Fourth was The Monster Brothers, and their song Babylon Bridges. The Monster Brothers are from Switzerland.  The band is made up of: Jason Temple: vocals, keys & ipad, Alex Bolonte: guitar, Paolo Gianinazzi: guitar, Nicole Regazzoni: Bass, Gionate Brunel: Drums, and Desiree Albicker: Violin.

Fifth I played Bronze and the song was Next Victim. The band consists of: Bailey who does vocals, & guitar, Chris on lead guitar, Joaquin on drums & vocals, and Steve on bass guitar.

Sixth was a new find.  Ronney Cary, and from his solo album Red for Ronny I chose Nobody's Sweetheart.
This is from his solo album, but he's also part of two other bands.  Ronney is from Minnesota USA.

The last two tracks I played last as they were local (Canadian) talent.

So the Seventh track was a band from Guelph Ontario, Persist.  They dropped me off 7 tracks, which was wonderful, and I chose Take.  (I think I may play more of their music on another show, down the road at some point).
The band consist of: K.C Lee on Vocals, Z on  Guitar, Christian on Guitar, K.J on Bass, and Jerry Stro on Drums.
The band hopes to have some gigs to play at this summer.

And Last up was GLO.  Great band from Montreal!  I chose their single from their new album, Don't Believe.  Their first album, On The Outside was released March 29th, 2011.  With their single from the new album being released January 12 2012.  And the entire album (No One Hears Me) being releeased in April of 2012!
The band GLO is currently on tour, and will be playing in Toronto on June 21st 2012 at 8pm at Lee's Palace!

Show 160: Emily Wolf, Discovery 2 & the Chris Takeover

If you haven't listened to all of the Justin Wayne Show 160 then you really should go back and listen to the whole thing, not just my takeover of the second half.

So my first track up this week was a band called Beat Six. Of the few tracks they had on Jamendo I chose Live Fast Lie Down. After the initial intro on the song, I thought it had a bit of a sca feel to it.  Its up beat, catchy and fun.  I thought it was a great choice to start off my hijacking of Justin's show. This band is from the UK.

Up next was Filthy Kicks. A band from the UK that I had recommended to my by my friend Becka.  (Thanks again Becka).  I loved that this song took us away from the standard Rock songs that get played.  I would highly suggest giving this band a listen.

And just to keep things interesting, I changed genre's again!   From their album WanTED, up next was Ted is Dead and their song, Life's Bleeding for the Living.  I was looking for something that would fall on the harder side of rock.  What do you think?  Did I find it?

Up next was my favorite song of the week.   A Canadian Band.  Chasing Eidolon (pronounced Eye-da-lon).  I contacted the band, and they say that they are working on a second album.  I can't wait to hear it if its as good as the first one.  I have their entire first album in my current play lists on my mp3 player.

And up last, was a a band called Avalanche, and their song Waterfall of Fire. As with the other four song this was sourced from Jamendo.

I had a lot of fun mixing up the Genre's this week.   If you want to learn more about any of the bands, see any of the above links.

Show 158: Vans, Frogs and Skies

The first time I did anything more than recommend songs to a podcast was Show 158 of The Justin Wayne Show I brought in four tracks.  We talked.  It was a lot of fun.

The band Owneshire (pronounced Owen-shy-er), is a local band.   They're from London Ontario.   You can check out their facebook page Owenshire or their band web page at: OwenShireand from listening to their music I would say that REM was their biggest influence.  If I had not been going to Fanshawe College I might never have found this group, as Rob, the lead singer and bass player is a professor at Fanshawe.

The second band I choose was Son Of a Bad Mad.  When someone suggested I listen to this group I was hooked.   Shawn Fisher has a unique sound to his voice. I was excited to purchase their first album, and the second on that was released early in 2012.   The bands fans paid for much of the recording and release of their second album.  This is one of the few indie bands over the last year that is always on my MP3 player.  You can check out their myspace page at: Son of a Bad Mad or their tumblr site which they do keep up to date. SOABM
Son of a Bad Man also does a number of covers that are well worth listening to.  Many of them are posted on YouTube.

The next one up on show 158 was Wolf Larsen's If I Be Wrong.   Should I have my details right I heard that song on The Bug Cast and well, Dave and Caroline do have excellent taste in music.   Wolf's voice is lovely.  The song very stirring and emotional.  You can learn more about Wolf and her music at: Wolf Larsen Music or her Band Camp page: Wolf Larsen

And last up for this show was a song called Surrender.   I'm not sure 100% how I found this track of if it found me, but its amazing.   It's instrumental.  I know it's on soundcloud, and the artist has a few songs up.  She also appears to have a facebook page and twitter, though none of them seem to be very active.   The song though is well worth the listen.

Below is the listing as it appears on Justin Wayne's web site for the show. If you did listen or do listen to the show, I would love to hear your feedback.
