Podcasting

Up until about 3 years ago I had never listened to a podcast.  Never.  I know, shocking.   I started with The Bugcast.   Got hooked.  Then discovered Darkcompass.  Loved Rowley's voice.  Got hooked even more.   Then started listening to other shows.   Nick Tann's  Is This Thing On, Graham Holland's It's A Frog's Life, Made in The UK, Insomnia Radio.   Even started listening to Butterflies Radio.  Everyone featuring so much great talent.

Being the music junkie I am ( I play mostly.... Flute, Bodhran, Recorder, Tin whistle, a bit of Clarinet, sax, french horn (just very basics), Trumpet, Piano, and currently trying to learn drums), supporting other musicians who were trying to peruse their dreams was a no brainer for me.   When I was laid off from my job in December of 2009 I did some volunteer work.  I helped out in the local public school, helping the music teacher with his grade 7 & 8 instrumental music class.  I really enjoyed it and wish that somehow I could have gotten into teacher college and become a music teacher.

Mostly I listened and tweeted at first.   Then I started surfing Jamendo looking for music to recommend to the hosts.  And Now, curating/guest hosting on The Justin Wayne show seems to be the next somewhat natural step in my musical journey.

I'm enjoying what seems to be my bi-weekly stints on Justin's show.

But it leaves me thinking of the next step.  And where will that take me?

Chasing Eidolon

So last week I was looking for tracks to play over on Jamendo.  It's a great site for indie musicians to get their stuff out there and be heard.  So on the main page was a album cover that reminded me of pac man.  So it hit play.   Enjoyed what I was hearing and headed to the page for the band.

Chasing Eidolon (pronounced Eye-da-lawn) are from Richmond BC Canada.  (I do love to support home grown talent).

The band consists of:
Alvin Man - vocals / rhythm guitar / keyboard
Andrew Choy - bass
Manuel Lee - drums
Angelo yue - lead guitar / vocals

So far they only have the one album that came out in 2008, but they have email to let me know that they have been working on another album.  Guys, if it's as great as this one, I can't wait to hear it.

This first album has 5 tracks, and they're all great.  But really you should all go listen and form your own opinions about it.  They have a good clean sound.  The vocals, well I truly enjoy being able to understand what is being sung, and not just hearing noise.

Knee Deep

Today I was exploring a new to me music site.   Reverbnation.  I found that they list local to you shows.  Fantastic! Where did this lead me?   Why to a local band that does covers.

Knee Deep is a 5 member group from Kitchener Ontario and Paris Ontario.  (Both towns rather local to me). They cover what they call the great bands of the 90's.  Bands like Pearl Jam, Bush, Lit, Seven Mary Three, Lenny Kravitz, The Flys, Weezer, Radiohead, The Hip, Matthew Good, Big Wreck, Finger Eleven, Our Lady Peace, I Mother Earth, Tool, Filter, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden.

All they have on Reverbnation are three cover tunes.  Machine Head being the best of the three I think.

Feel free to check them out and form your own opinion of them, but if you're in Kitchener Ontario Friday May 25th, 2012 they're playing a gig at Molly Blooms.

Talking on The Justin Wayne Show

I tried something new toady.  Yep, new.  I sent 4 song recommendations to Justin for his show.  Nothing strange or highly exciting there until you get to the Skype conversation we had to go with them.  Yes folks, I will be talking with Justin on his pod cast.

So if you don't normally listen in to this great podcast, humor me and give today show a listen.

Darkcompass Podcast

This is a music podcast that I might not have found if Caroline had not shared the link to The Bugcast.  You see one week, Dave & Caroline did a show swap with Rowley.  The first think I thought when the episode of the Bugcast he was hosting started was "Man he's got a nice voice!"  It was his speaking voice and choice of music that prompted me to give his show a try.   Most of his shows are about an hour long.   Which over the past year have been just perfect for my drive to and from school.

Darkcompass is one of the longest running music podcasts in the UK, and just recently Rowley won  prestigious National Winner Award this year at The European Podcast Awards . Way to go Rowley.

I never know what to expect music wise on the show, but I have yet to be disappointed by any of Rowley's choices on what to play.

So if you want to try a new show, and you enjoy listening someone who has a great speaking voice I'd highly recommend giving this show a try.  And if you like metal, he does a metal show too!

Fresh Bodyshop

I think the first time I heard a Fresh Body Shop song was on The Bugcast. (They do play lots of great music).  Fresh Body Shop is from Nantes France.  The band says they play Indie/pop/rock. After hearing the band on The Bugcast I wandered over to Jamendo to hear more of their music.  They have several albums out including my favorite Make This End, with my favorite song Angry Machine.

June 2011 they signed an EP with Bristol based Reel Me In Records.

I highly recommend checking out this group, and giving their music a listen.
